Getting extremely nauseous with new medicine, remedies?

Question: Getting extremely nauseous with new medicine, remedies?

(Posted by: Jane on 2009-08-17 15:51:07)

I was dx'd in June at age 18 w/ T2 (bit of a surprise seeing as I'm not obese or had any symptoms), and it seems to be progressing really fast :( Anyway, they've quadrupled my Metformin since then, so I'm taking 1, 000 mg twice a day as well as 30 mg Actos once a day (This started last Thursday). The problem: I'm getting so nauseous whenever I take these medications, it's so bad I'm nauseous the entire day. I know that Met can cause some ugly side affects so what remedies can I do until my body adjusts? ETA: Just an FYI I've had an antibodies test done and it was negative, so they're sure its Type 2. @ intheflow No, diabetes is "not always brought on by poor diet ". I've been following a strict vegetarian diet for a long while before diagnosis, and if you're telling me that soy products with vegetables is a poor diet and I caused my own diabetes you're sadly misinformed. FYI my entire family has T2 diabetes. It's genetic, educate yourself. The end. Thanks to everyone else though :)

Candied ginger can help with nausea but it is coated with sugar. You can hold a piece under running warm water and rinse off the sugar before you eat it. You can also use ginger tea. What we found really helps with the nausea and runs usually associated with Metformin is to eat a serving of yogurt before taking the Metformin. Look for a yogurt that says NO SUGAR ADDED on the label. It might have Splenda or aspertame, that's ok, but no sugar. We use Danone. Have the yogurt, then the Metfomin and a glass of water, then eat your meal. This seems to stop the stomach problems that metformin causes. It really works! The Metformin dose is usually raised every few weeks until they get a dose that does the job. This is perfectly normal. They can't give you a high dose right at the start because your stomach couldn't handle it. It takes time for your digestion to adjust to each time the raise the dose. Be patient, eventually they'll get you on the right dose for your needs. Good luck!

Type 2 diabetes is almost always brought about with wrong diet. If you really want to be healthy and solve your diabetes you have to make some strong decisions to change your lifestyle. The drugs will only destroy your pancreas over time. I suggest you go to curezone.com and find the forum that supports diabetes. There you can get lots of help. In the meantime if you are still nauseous, chew on some ginger candy or sip some ginger tea. It always helps me get over that queazy nauseous feeling in my stomach.

Oh I know what you mean, the 'Metformin Blues' are awful. How are you taking them? I am on the highest dose and I have found that I must take them with a meal. I can not take them with say a snack or anything really small. Also I used to eat a meal then take my pills right after and I found I was feeling really sick. Now I eat half my meal and take the pills and then finish and I am not nearly as sick as I used to be. There are also 'slow release' metformin which have been used for people who can not tolerate the regular metformin. See your doctor and they should be able to advise if this is something they can offer you. Thanks.
